I had the polish and at first bite, I was going to give the place 2 stars....it was saltier than polishes I've had in the past. But what made me change my mind? Finishing it. It was plump and juicy, and it came dressed (did I just use that word? Yep.) with mustard and onions. There could've been more mustard but the onions made up for my lack luster condiment by being crisp but cooked, not soggy and overly sweet like other places.

I have no idea what the hell happened. Maybe they lost their head cook. Maybe they changed food supplier. Whatever it was, the food here is now B-A-D. I used to be able to rely on Tasty Dog for a good burger, but about a year ago, something changed, and now it's just flat our awful. I thought it might just be me, but my wife agrees, it's different. I would give it a try every few months since the first bad experience just to make sure they weren't going through a rough patch, but every time was the same unappetizing experience. I think I'm done trying :/

I know the answer as to why you weren't busy when I came in. 1) soggy hot dog bun, must not have shaken the water off the dog when you took it out of the steamer before placing in the bun. 2) you put LETTUCE AND CUCUMBER on your CHICAGO HOT DOG?! It doesn't belong!!! 3) hot dog was cold. Putting the wrong items on a Chicago Dog automatically will constitute a poor review. 4) staff could smile a little more. Good Luck!

This place meets your expectations if you accept it for what it is--it's a greasy spoon kind of place that you go to if you're hungover or something like that! Burgers, fries, hot dogs, milk shakes, all that good stuff! They didn't have chili cheese fries on the menu, but they made it for me anyway. And it was delicious. My friend and I sat there for 5 hours and chatted all afternoon, and no one batted an eye at us either. Perfect sit-down casual place just to chat about your dreams and goals! Ironically, they were advertising that "fresh fruit cups are now here" on their sign in front--I think the last thing that I would order here is a fresh fruit cup!

Will this place most ay open in exclusive Oak Park where everything is high end. I hope so this is a cute hot dog stand in a great location. The city wants its taxes but I want to see diversity of food businesses in this hip suburb of Chicago that has enough chains, wine bars,Suishi places, and expensive Italian dining that has a message to average man your welcome in Berwyn. Places like Tasty Dogs has a niche to fill

Who puts lettuce on a hot dog? The hot dog was too much like a salad with lettuce and cucumbers. I liked the cucumbers, but not the lettuce and no sport peppers? Weirdest chicago dog "with everything" I've ever had. I wouldn't quite call it tasty.

Best hotdogs around! So delicious! Staff is wonderful, young and uplifting. Milkshakes; great! I have tried almost everything on the menu but my all time fave would definitely have to be the grilled chicken! So good! Totally recommend Tasty Dog!

This place was much better back in the day. This is sad.. I come here maybe once a month before a go to a hair appointment. It seems that every so often I have to send things back while dining in since it's not cooked thru. The staff is nice but they are unfortunately falling back on the old rep. Go to Mickey's for a burger & Johnny's for beef. Yes Tasty Dog your FRIES ARE DA BOMB... But it's time for me & you to move on.

The burgers at Tasty Dog are pretty good, but I would rate their hot dogs below average. But that's not why I'm writing. When you buy something there, be sure to look at your receipt. I just bought a double cheeseburger combo there which was listed on the menu at $7.19, but they actually charged me $7.44. I advised them that this was illegal (not to mention outrageously high-priced), but it took a lot to get them to understand that this was wrong.

A general rule for shopping for a good hot dog in Chicago or the suburbs is whether or not they serve Vienna Beef. Well, I was craving a hot dog and happened to swing by Tasty Dog because it was close to my old apartment and had a Vienna Beef sign in in the window. Now you would think that because a place serves Vienna Beef that they could at least serve a decent hot dog, right? WRONG. I ordered a hot dog "with everything", unwrapped it, and was shocked to find a two huge hamburger-patty sized beefsteak tomato slices that sat ON TOP of the bun, placed side-by-side and covering the entire length and width of the bun. Hmmm... a little strange I thought to myself, but hold on... give it a chance. Curious to see what was under the tomatoes I was downright HORRIFIED when I removed them to find LETTUCE, HAMBURGER PICKLES, and CUCUMBERS!!! Mother of God what is this unholy abomination?!?! Now I accept that there are variations on the "dragged through the garden" or "hot dog with everything" in the greater Chicago metropolitan region. Not all places use celery salt, some places use plain buns, some use poppy-seed buns, there are slight variations on the pickles and relish etc., and that's all fine and good, but not THIS. My guess is this bastardization of the Chicago dog came about through just pure laziness! The guy who created the Tasty Dog must have been thinking: "Gee, it's so much easier to have one-size-fits-all toppings for both burgers and dogs than to have to slice up the tomatoes in different sizes and use different kinds of pickles! How 'bout instead I try to be creative with my laziness and create a dog that works with hamburger toppings but is uniquely ours! Yeah, I'll throw some lettuce and cucumber slices on there! They'll sell like hotcakes!" Oh, and the chili dogs aren't very good either. The chili was thin and runny, and had a funny flavor. If you had served it to me in a bowl I might not have guessed it was supposed to be chili. I'll admit I haven't tried the burgers, but the dogs are extremely disappointing, and so far the only reason I've found worth going here is for the chicken gyros, which no one else in town serves and are actually pretty tasty. Tasty dog is just one of those places that needs to try a little harder. And serve a proper Chicago dog, dammit! You can still serve that other hot dog monstrosity for the few weirdos out there that like lettuce and cucumber on their hot dogs. Maybe if this place stayed open later they could compete with the "drunk" market, because you seriously need to be pretty drunk to think that lettuce on a hot dog is a good idea.

  • Steve B.

I just ate a free lunch here and I was still disappointed in the food. Ate the chicken sandwich and it was the same as eating in a middle school cafeteria. Nothing wrong with fast food but I can not forgive the horrible sandwich I just ate.

    (1)
  • Thomas C.

Oh tasty dog ... I love your toppings, I am so-so on your actual dogs which are disappointing at best. This visit tried the chili dog ... too much chili that's too runny for a chili dog, needs more body. Also had the regular hot dog ... like I said, love the toppings, so so on the dog. Fries are ok, but when you've got Gene and Judes so close by (or close enough) where you can get fresh cut fries and a much, MUCH better dog (heck, there's a bunch of places I would rather get a dog that are convenient enough) why suffer through this? It's a shame because it's my local stand, a lot of fuss was made to keep it in Oak Park years ago ... and it's mediocre at best.

Tasty Dog is living on good faith reputation built when they first opened across the street nearly 30 years ago. Back then, it was fresh fast food (if such a thing exists). Now, it's just another hot dog dump. After a mild case of food poisoning for myself and my girlfriend from a hot dog and a hamburger last week, we're finally done.

This is one of those hot dog/Italian beef places all around Chicago that once rained supreme, but has fallen on bad times. I am sure this place was the shit 10 or 20 years ago, but not anymore and not when there are much better burgers, hot dogs and restaurants out there. I tried the $1.25 taco special on Monday, and the taco was tasty, but seemed out of place at a hot dog place. I did try the Chicago dog with all available toppings, but it just felt wrong because there was celery salt and no real enthusiasm from the guy behind the counter. Will probably never return.

    (2)
  • CheesecakeChick I.

the dog itself was tasty, after I removed the tasteless pale pinkish limp slices of tomato, half the shredded lettuce and the cucumber slices. also ordered the Monday taco special, which was not so special.

Two years ago when I was working in Oak Park I brought the worst Thai noodles I have ever consumed. I think the brand was Nissin, but I'm pretty sure it was Nissan since they tasted like motor oil. I disgustedly threw my noodles in the trash and set out on a mission. I was going to find a milkshake in walking distance from Lake & Oak Park Ave. for under three dollars. Not even looking at you, Oberwies, or your outdated conservative political leanings! (Actually don't care... I want a cheap milkshake.) ALAS, THERE IS TASTY DOG! Got a milkshake for $2.93, by the way great job making such arbitrarily specific prices for all of your food. Now we need to talk about that combo sandwich... That thing is LETHAL! One of the greatest experiences with Italian Sausage that I have ever had! They use the spicy stuff, not that crap with the sweet peppers in it. Top that off with some shredded beast and giardineria and this is truly the food of the gods. I do miss working in Oak Park; however, if I stayed there I would probably have a zipper scar on my chest by now.

Their food is nothing special, and not bad either. It's pretty good if you are, you know..driving around and want to get a quick bite to eat. It's located right by my old high school, so I am familiar with the place. The staff there are very friendly, mature, professional, and all the more. Sometimes, they even give you free food if they messed up an order, or an order is no longer viable. Great place with great people.

    (4)
  • Timothy T.

You come here if your walking by and can't make it to Johnny's or Portillo's. Ok food at prices a bit higher than market value. Can't blame them with the location / foot traffic.

    (3)
  • Shannon D.

Brought some out of town guests here because we thought they would like authentic Chicago hot dogs....I guess because they are in Oak Park they don't serve Chicago Dogs. We ate the salad on the wiener things, and also tried the the tamales. Maybe that would be better. It was a frozen tamale (like you would get at a 7-11) microwaved, left in the cellophane packaging, and then wrapped in deli paper. We were expecting spectacular....it's a hot dog joint, but we should have just gone to the 7-11...it would have cost less and would have possibly been better.

    (1)
  • Laurina J.

Want a greasy, good meal? This place will not disappoint! My guilty pleasure is their tacos...oh so bad but taste oh so good. Service is fast and friendly, nothing special, nothing fancy. I have never had one of their hot dogs but love their tacos and their burgers are diner perfect!!!

    (4)
  • Kathy W.

Will not be back. customer service is bad. No thank you & guy that took order was answering my questions, by a nod of his head. My combo with sweet peppers were over cooked. Were very mushy. Will not spend my money here.

    (1)
  • Sean F.

You'd think that a Vienna Beef hot dog joint couldn't be bad. But this one is. The buns aren't good, the hot dogs are somehow just meh, the prices aren't great and the atmosphere kinda stinks. It stays in business because of proximity to OPRF. My suggestion is to find another hot dog joint.

    (2)
  • amy h.

I get it. It's a hot dog joint. But it needs a visit from the health department. When I was there they had cheese just sitting out and if you open the condiment door, it looks like a crime scene with ketchup and garbage strung about. And the fries? They give you a lot but we got all the leftover, over-fried shards. Nasty.

    (1)
  • Angela C.

The watermelon slushes are awesome. The perfect amount of sugary syrup and icy goodness. The fries are nothing special and neither is the dog. It's certainly not a true Chicago dog, but they didn't advertise it as such. Convenient when you just want a dog, but nothing to write home to momma about.

    (3)
  • Suze A.

I finally convinced my sister to bring me here and I'm so excited she did. We pigged out on hot dogs, fries and slushes. The flavor of the day was blue raspberry, which made me so happy. The hot dogs were delicious and the fries were crisp. The employees were friendly and kind of hilarious when we tried to beat the giant group of kids rushing toward the door. Yum!

  • Joshua N.

I really want to give this place 3 stars. I have fond memories of eating lunch here when I was in high school 25 years ago (old location), and this is an important restaurant in Oak Park tradition. But it's just not anything special, and you are paying slightly more than you would for something better in nearby Chicago, Forest Park, or Berwyn. If you come here, don't get the hot dogs. I know you might expect with the name "Tasty Dog" the hot dog would be the thing to get, but it's just a really lame dirty water dog. Instead, get a burger or chicken sandwich. They can't screw those up as easily, and they are a better value. Bonus: cool old photos of Oak Park on the walls, if you are in to that sort of thing.

    (2)
  • Nick D.

Got good gyros! Great place to satisfy your urge for guilty food choices! Go ahead try the cheese fries and a tasty chocolate shake while your at it. I enjoyed mine! Cheers!

I love Tasty Dog. I was a returning Chicago expat who was attending a wedding in Oak Park a few weekends ago. The day after the wedding we stumbled into Tasty Dog before leaving town for Oklahoma. Our visit was pleasant: the walls were fun to look at and the hotdogs were delightful. The staff was also friendly and courteous. After lunch we were in St. Louis, halfway home to Oklahoma via 35 South, when we realized we left my camera bag at Tasty Dog! Long story short; the staff and owner of Tasty Dog were such great Americans that they made sure I got my camera bag back, which also held my phone and Kindle Fire. I love Tasty Dog! Good dogs and good people! Thanks, Mike!

  • Kira R.

This place is a solid 3 stars. There are somethings that are good and I'd had them again. My husband thinks the tacos are okay nothing out of this world, but he'll eat them when they're on special. I had a burger which was good and basic. There are definitely things here that suck, we each had hotdogs once. The whole salad on a hot dog thing? weird. The problem was the dog itself, tasted bad and was all grey, yeck.

    (3)
  • Liz W.

I've only tried the cheese fries here and they were ok. Not much to say. They are your basic frozen fast food fries. The cheese sauce was edible except the fact that it got cold fast. The portion size was huge for the price. It was under $3 and you got a huge bag of fries.

    (3)
  • Pete D.

Still a fan, but watch your drive through orders. We got food there, and they did mess up on what was supposed to be on (and not on the sandwich) I am not a big fan of drive through food in general, so I tend to be a little more critical of it from anywhere. Based on my established personal bias and experience from several drive through purchases here, I prefer and reccomend dining in vs. drive through. I believe in places like this vs big chains, as the money they make is more likely to make it back into the local economy.

As I have mentioned in a previous hot dog related review, I enjoy a truly good hot dog and I am very particular to preparation. I'm proud to say that Tasty Dog delivers and takes pride in their product. Now, I know I recently panned a nearby place for offering a poor imitation of a "Chicago Style" dog and despite the fact that Tasty Dog technically doesn't have the "standard issue" toppings, they do put out a very tasty product. Ok, so does lettuce belong on a Chicago Style dog? No, but then again they aren't trying to label it as such. What you get is a pure beef dog, served on a steamed bun (served HOT... Take a note competitor in Forest Park), with nice chunks of onions, shredded lettuce, pickle chips, cucumber slices, tomatoes and mustard. Its a nice combination of flavor and very balanced. The fries, on the other hand, were nothing special. They were good, but not memorable. As for the dining experience, you will notice that the Vienna Beef signs are proudly displayed, just like many other hot dog joints, but the difference is that Tasty Dog is very clean and nicely decorated... for a hot dog place. I point this out, because I went there for lunch on a Saturday where a lot of families were doing the same thing. Does cleanliness make for a good product? No, but its refreshing to see that a business owner doesn't forget that cleanliness is a vital part of food service.

I must be honest...I wanted to try Five Guys but they don't offer anything I eat so back to old faithful! Still love the turkey burger and now i'm a fan of the outdoor seating! They will start serving breakfast on June 1

    (5)
  • Brian F.

Darn good hotdog and fries served with a really mediocre chocolate shake. I'd definitely go back for the dog. The condiments were a little strange, though. Instead of serving tomatoes and pickles that are sliced to fit in the bun, they were way too big so I had to eat them first and then the dog. They had really cool decorations up for Halloween.

    (3)
  • Cj L.

Who uses precooked chicken? Are you to lazy to prep it? And iceberg lettuce doesn't make it a salad.

    (2)
  • Tina C.

Um I have to change my review from my last one. When I think of my childhood I think of tasty dog. Vienna beef dogs with a steamed bun onions relish etc...... Reality check here! I got a dog and it wasn't Vienna beef it was served cold with a plop of weird cut up tomatoes on one side and crazy onions on the other. This to say the least did not bring me back to my childhood. And made me very sad. Tasty dog you are failing there is much competion out there and you rank last!!! Never ever will I eat here Again.....

  • robert a.

I am not a big fan of fast food, nor drive thru windows. Sometimes those things become a reality, and if have to go down that road---well skip the burger chains and roll into the Tasty Dog. Old school, good food for what you asking for, and you buying local. Burger away good kids.

    (3)
  • Grace I.

This place is just ok. It's nice and cheap, but it could be a better quality. The service is alright and it's a nice local place to go.

    (3)
  • Vanessa d.

I was really looking forward to trying the hot dogs here. Totally not worth the anticipation. The hot dog was not really good, the fries were cold, the italian beef was lack-luster. I'm glad that I tried it, but I don't think I would go back. Since the place has been there since the 80's, I thought that they might be around because they're good; so not the case. I'm giving this place two stars because I did like their milkshake. Synopsis: Not so tasty dog.

  • James M.

Hmmm. One of those places that is a bit of an institution in the area, like Johnnies, Eric's Deli, and Darky's,which I always felt slightly offended by, until the Missus told me the sign actually says Parky's. Tasty Dog is supposed to be a classic, and maybe the dogs are the thing, because my burger certainly wasn't. A double cheese of single weight, with a small piece of cheddar (maybe) in between those featherweight patties. Sport peppers on the side, which made it edible at least, and a small thimbleful of grilled onions that I asked for. Not impressed. Missus liked her chicken sandwich with a slice of american cheese. And we both loved the fries--so good! Alas, they're not enough to change the way I feel about this place: "Not so tasty--DAWG!" (Yeah, I wrote that, and i'm slightly embarrassed. More than slightly.)

    (2)
  • Shawn D.

Solid hot dog and gyro place. Will stop by if I'm in the area. Fries are hit or miss. I've never had a problem with my order, but I always go in, so that probably helps.

    (3)
  • Tish G.

The only hotdog joint I really go to because the polish is sooooo wondeful! Customer service sucks, but the polish is good! Some girl at drive thru hates her job it seems. Other than that, it looks like a popular hang out for the high school crowd.

    (4)
  • Christina R.

They may be getting an extra star for sentimental reasons, but I really do think they have the best chicken sandwich around. (Waaay better than Wendy's) Their dogs are tasty, and so are their shakes. It's close to the high school so watch out for rogue students and football games. If you're getting food to go for a group, beware that the lids don't seem to fit the cups very securely.

    (4)
  • Nina I.

Asked for a Chicago dog, I got meat, lettuce and tomato.... the meat itself tasted horrible and the fries were really soggy. I clarified to the lady how I wanted my food literally four times and my order was still wrong.... maybe it's because I went through the drive thru, regardless, I won't be giving it another shot for a while :/

    (1)
  • Joe B.

Terrible service. Order is always wrong. Fries are soggy/undercooked. Staff is short and rude. Major disappointment.

    (1)
  • Suzanne S.

Ok, I realize that : A. I seem to give every place 5 stars (I just like to review places I like, ok?) & B. I grew up eating here But regardless, this place is awesome! I don't eat cheeseburgers anymore, but if I were going to eat one again, it would be here. Same for hot dogs, and the chicken sandwich.... So what do I eat at Tasty Dog now? The veggie sandwich. It's basically a cheesburger with everything, hold the burger. The toppings are so good (cucumber, pickles, tomato, lettuce, celery salt, relish..). Cheese fries are also excellent, as are the shakes. And I love that you can pump your own ketchup into the tiny cups ;)

    (5)
  • Rich A.

Great Hot Dog place. Used to frequent this place a lot going to school at OPRF years ago (their old location was closer to the high school). If you like Chicago style dogs, and who doesn't, then you will like the Tasty Dog.

    (4)
  • Dan P.

Just okay. But okay is not good enough when you've got greatness like Gene & Judes within driving distance. Not in a hurry to go back.

    (2)
  • Mary Ann C.

Disappointing fries----ick! My 2 year old thought they were great, but I thought they were small and lacking in flavor. AND, after a week of watching my calories, I was PRETTY disappointed with the quality. The cheeseburger with everything was yummy, although not the best! Not sure I will be returning anytime soon!

    (2)
  • Michelle H.

Maybe it's because my high school was down the block from here and I've had endless greasy, bad meals here so I'm just over it, but tasty dog is just not good. Yeah okay, there hot dogs are decent but my soul can just not stand to have one more oreo shake, I just can't do it. There are better places to go in the area for this type of food.

    (2)
  • Tina M.

    Love the kids cheeseburger meals.

  • Marlene S.

Now serving breakfast! Yes, you can get pancakes, french toast, and bacon and egg sandwiches at this popular dog and burger spot. Actually, the menu is much larger than that. Open 7 to 10 for breakfast. Items are made fresh, so it takes about 10 minutes to get your order filled. Yesterday I tried the bacon/egg/cheese on whole wheat toast - usually 1.99, but free as part of their opening days promo. Very satisfying! Will go back this morning to try something else. This might turn out to be my Sat. morning hang out spot.

Local and old school-ish. I like it.

  • K S.

Love this place! I have been eating here for a couple decades and it never disappoints. My favorite is the Gyros and cheese fries. Best I've had so far. I also love the hot dogs but everything is good. If I ever move this is one place I will surely miss.

Best fast food burger in oak park. That's right mickeys fans you got beat by a hotdog joint. Great cheese fries, cures any hangover.

  • Garrett and Kristal J.

This is a great place in town to grab a "fresh" burger and hot crispy fries though the drive thru ... but just a heads up ... you know there is a possibility that you could pay for it later! We usually get burgers and fries, but haven't attempted to try anything else ... yet. I'm not sure why Pickles seem more like lightly vinegared cucumbers, and why the need to be on MY burger ... but when I remember to ask for as little on my burger as possible, it actually is pretty good. Maybe not the place to dine in, or even on a regular basis, but when you're in the mood for a burger and don't feel like dining in or driving to Portillo's ... this is a good place to go.

    (3)
  • josh C.

Had the italian beef sandwich with hot peppers on a rainy day... The sandwich was pretty typical, greasy and served on a white bread roll with nice and juicy beef. After I added the peppers it was quite good.

Pretty good spot to get something to eat for me in the Oak Park area. Also seems to be popular with the Chicago Police as I often have to ask an officer if they are in hurry and would like to cut in front of me, so you'll be safe here. The food is pretty good usually, but it can take a few minutes for your order to come up. They also seem to close in the evening earlier than most hot dog joints like this one.

  • Trent C.

Good hot dog place in Oak Park, right on Lake Street. Went here for lunch on a Friday. The place is good for cheap eats that are on the greasy side of things. During the week, it seems as though this place gets inundated by the kids from Oak Park High School up the street. Easy to find a seat and there's plenty of options on the menu. Decent portions and you can't complain about the prices. Worth a stop if you're looking for something fast and cheap in Oak Park.

  • Meghan L.

you know what, tasty dog? i get what your deal is...and i get that this a place you go for a quick burger or hot dog, not a kale salad or a lentil pilaf or anything that could be attached to the world "wholesome." but for a veggie sandwich, i think you can seriously do better than a slice of kraft single-type cheese, iceberg lettuce, raw onion, mustard, and ketchup on a bun. this thing is like a condiment sandwich, guys. grill a few peppers and a zucchini or something. it won't kill you. you can even keep them frozen and microwave them when you see me coming by. i don't care. just have something for vegetarians that isn't totally awful.

  • Anika S.

I have lived in Oak Park basically my whole life. Ever since I could remember, I was going to Tasty Dog. I remember when I was younger, it seemed like the same people worked there everyday so, when you went in you had the ability to learn the worker's names and they were usually pretty nice. One thing that I don't like about them now is that when the bad economy hit, they, like many other businesses raised their prices and lowered the quality. The food is still good, but as a person that used to go a lot, I could tell the difference. The milkshakes that I had are really good, some of the best that I ever had. I like the vanilla and Oreo shakes. They are both creamy and thick. I usually get the hamburger combo with everything on it. They put cucumbers on their burgers and I think on their hot dogs as well. This is different and taste good on it. The chicken combo is good too. I think they put lettuce, mayo, and cheese on it. The chicken sandwich is breaded though. Their fries have a unique taste to them. They are regular fries, but I can usually tell if they are Tasty Dog fries or from some where else. I don't know. But they are very good, and they give you a lot of them.

Ever since they have moved to the new location I have been disappointed in the quality, taste and price of the food. I end up going there because I went there as a teenager. The hotdogs are overpriced for what they are and they do not come with fries as most hotdog joints do. The hotdogs are not Vienna as advertised and what they used to be. The food seems cheaper but at a higher price. You end up Paying $10 for a hotdog fries and a drink! Hotdogs at other places cost $2 and come with fries as well drinks cost $1.50 (and that is a medium which is really a large drink) so you spend $3.50 for a hotdog and fries elsewhere... Tasty Dog needs to re-evaluate there situation!

  • Kelly W.

I frequent this restaurant a few times a week for my employers son. He typically only orders a large fry. Two out of three times I go there, I hit my car on the narrow entry way. Needless to say, I am not a fan of their narrow parking lot/drive-thru. Aside from that, they are very quick, although we are only ordering fries. I did used to go here as a student at OPRF as well, and the food was good. Nothing spectacular, but it was 'tasty.'

I'm not sure if this is a valid review, considering I haven't had a Tasty Dog in approximately 22 years. My parents would take me here when I was good, which wasn't very often, but often enough to make a mark on me. I'd have my the same thing every time. Dog with lettuce / tomato. Let me make one thing clear to you. Tasty Dog shaped the very fabric of my hot dog world. To this day, every hot dog I eat, create or find in the dumpster, is just a sad attempt to live up to the Tasty Dogs of my youth. Even after a couple decades have past, I remember every texture, every juicy vegetable and meat product that went into the hot dogs from this place. Humid mid west summers, coke slurpies and a tasty dog. This is what forged me into what I am today.

Good Luck!

  • Andrew J.

Stopped here on a quest for a good chili dog. The hot dog I had had lettuce on it which was pretty weird. I wouldn't go out of my way for these, but I woudn't turn them down if someone was bringing them over.

  • Beth E.

This is definitely not a favorite of mine. The hot dogs are nothing special. They seem to put large slices of veggies as toppings on the hot dogs. Their fries are okay. I am just not really impressed with this establishment. The local youth (high schoolers/jr highers) always seem to enjoy it, though, when I have been there.

    (1)
  • Gary K.

I'll be fair and say I've only had their hotdogs once, but I think this place was hyped way more than it deserves. The dog seemed quite ordinary and the toppings didn't spice it up at all. I'd definately recommend Portillo's down on Roosevelt Road over Tasty Dog.

    (2)
  • Allison K.

Well the food here is OK, but there really is nothing special about the hot dogs here. I've also tired the hamburgers and chicken sandwiches here too, which were about average in taste. My favorite food item here would have to be the milk shakes and cheese fries. I guess this place is great for convenience because they have a drive-thru and they have great hours. So if you are craving junk food you should go here, but be aware you pay for what you get.

    (2)
  • Kai K.

  • Meghan L.

you know what, tasty dog? i get what your deal is...and i get that this a place you go for a quick burger or hot dog, not a kale salad or a lentil pilaf or anything that could be attached to the world "wholesome." but for a veggie sandwich, i think you can seriously do better than a slice of kraft single-type cheese, iceberg lettuce, raw onion, mustard, and ketchup on a bun. this thing is like a condiment sandwich, guys. grill a few peppers and a zucchini or something. it won't kill you. you can even keep them frozen and microwave them when you see me coming by. i don't care. just have something for vegetarians that isn't totally awful.

    (2)
  • Carlo C.

tastes no different than if i bought everything from the grocery store. had the chili dog with cheese and was unimpressed as far as a chicago dog goes. fries were bowling alley style fries. super oily. i'll keep looking elsewhere

    (2)
  • Justin G.

It's not a bad place to go. i think it is okay, but I know one guy who can't get enough of it. It has always been a high school hot spot since the high school is about a block away. It's your average fast food place, but they do have some good twists on some regular favorites, like Southwestern Gyros, that was pretty good. I'd probably give it another half a star just for that one dish.

  • A.S. V.

Can anyone really tell the difference between hot dogs? It's a hot dog man, they're all disgusting, but perfect when you're drunk or don't think about what's in it. Really, I just like the sign.

  • Bill F.

Stopped by Tasty Dog for the first and last time, just a couple of days ago. Used the drive through, ordered the special, 2 hotdogs/fries/med. drink. I wanted everything on the dogs and got it....who puts lettuce on hotdogs? The fries were decent. The service is poor, though. No straw with the drink, fries thrown into the bag so that they were scattered and no longer in their little bag, no thank you expressed for stopping by. I've had much better hotdogs from chain restaurants...Teddy's, Portillos, Juniors.

I liked this place much better before it moved across the street, several years ago. It was a classic greasy dive and a lunchtime/after-school haven for Oak Park high school kids. Then it moved, tried to clean itself up, and gave everything a sterile, whitewashed feel. Not a fun environment to eat hot dogs in. Okay, I know nobody really cares about that, because if you're going to a place called Tasty Dog you're not really in it for the ambiance. And for delicious greasy fare, I still must admit that they deliver big-time here. I've never really ventured to anything beyond hot dogs and burgers on the menu, but if you're looking for a good greasy slab of beef in hot dog or burger form, Tasty Dog will do just fine.

    (3)

I had a chili cheese dog here that tasted decent, but it was one of those things you know is going to disagree with your stomach even before you've finished eating it. The menu here is immense, but so much so that you wonder what their real specialty is.

I just ate a free lunch here and I was still disappointed in the food. Ate the chicken sandwich and it was the same as eating in a middle school cafeteria. Nothing wrong with fast food but I can not forgive the horrible sandwich I just ate.

    (1)

Who uses precooked chicken? Are you to lazy to prep it? And iceberg lettuce doesn't make it a salad.

    (4)
  • Samantha V.

Who puts lettuce on a hot dog? The hot dog was too much like a salad with lettuce and cucumbers. I liked the cucumbers, but not the lettuce and no sport peppers? Weirdest chicago dog "with everything" I've ever had. I wouldn't quite call it tasty.

    (3)
  • Brittany T.

  • Wilma M.

Best hotdogs around! So delicious! Staff is wonderful, young and uplifting. Milkshakes; great! I have tried almost everything on the menu but my all time fave would definitely have to be the grilled chicken! So good! Totally recommend Tasty Dog!

  • Jen R.

  • Kathy W.

Will not be back. customer service is bad. No thank you & guy that took order was answering my questions, by a nod of his head. My combo with sweet peppers were over cooked. Were very mushy. Will not spend my money here.

Yum!

  • Liz W.

I've only tried the cheese fries here and they were ok. Not much to say. They are your basic frozen fast food fries. The cheese sauce was edible except the fact that it got cold fast. The portion size was huge for the price. It was under $3 and you got a huge bag of fries.

  • robert a.

I am not a big fan of fast food, nor drive thru windows. Sometimes those things become a reality, and if have to go down that road---well skip the burger chains and roll into the Tasty Dog. Old school, good food for what you asking for, and you buying local. Burger away good kids.

Love this place! I have been eating here for a couple decades and it never disappoints. My favorite is the Gyros and cheese fries. Best I've had so far. I also love the hot dogs but everything is good. If I ever move this is one place I will surely miss.

Great Hot Dog place. Used to frequent this place a lot going to school at OPRF years ago (their old location was closer to the high school). If you like Chicago style dogs, and who doesn't, then you will like the Tasty Dog.

Just okay. But okay is not good enough when you've got greatness like Gene & Judes within driving distance. Not in a hurry to go back.

Stopped here on a quest for a good chili dog. The hot dog I had had lettuce on it which was pretty weird. I wouldn't go out of my way for these, but I woudn't turn them down if someone was bringing them over.

I'll be fair and say I've only had their hotdogs once, but I think this place was hyped way more than it deserves. The dog seemed quite ordinary and the toppings didn't spice it up at all. I'd definately recommend Portillo's down on Roosevelt Road over Tasty Dog.

So if you are craving junk food you should go here, but be aware you pay for what you get.

tastes no different than if i bought everything from the grocery store. had the chili dog with cheese and was unimpressed as far as a chicago dog goes. fries were bowling alley style fries. super oily. i'll keep looking elsewhere

I had a chili cheese dog here that tasted decent, but it was one of those things you know is going to disagree with your stomach even before you've finished eating it. The menu here is immense, but so much so that you wonder what their real specialty is.

Can anyone really tell the difference between hot dogs? It's a hot dog man, they're all disgusting, but perfect when you're drunk or don't think about what's in it. Really, I just like the sign.
